gig posters are a relatively new thing for me in terms of actually designing them. in my current job, i do done a shit ton (yes, that’s a technical term here) of hand lettering and illustrating. more of the former than the latter, really. and as a designer, i have a natural affinity to typography and this has only been accentuated as of late. so, in seeking an outlet for this need to do work that’s not always about food or some holiday, i hit up the state room. not necessarily because it’s a venue i frequent, but more so because they don’t get much love in their advertising here in SLC. plus, their lower profile shows provide me with the challenge of researching the music and i discover some great tunes in the process. really, it’s win-win. okay, so i don’t get paid for this gig but i can see shows for free, so i’m not complaining.

i’m actually quite a fan of this duo. it’s a hell of a lot more mellow than some of my latest things i listen to, but they definitely have a vocal synergy and lyrics that leave your ears gripping onto the beautifully simple sound. be sure to check out their most notable song “poison & wine” that was on grey’s anatomy. looking forward to seeing them in a couple months.
without much further ado, here’s my initial draft for what i’m thinking for the civil wars who will be here january 20, 2011. in regards to style, i’m on a french vintage kick and i wanted to create something just very visually beautiful. i still need to include the opening band and how to do the date, times, etc. plus, i think it will feel different when i finally bring it to the computer. i welcome your thoughts, so feel free to chime in as you please.
